COCKATIEL ( Nymphicus hollandius ). Are small parrot from Australia and his said to be related to cockatoo.
Some orthinologists believe that the cockatiel is really a cockatoo which in the process of evolution remained behind in size and come to look  more like a parakeet than a true parrot , So their fore cockatiels are the smallest member of the cockatoo family ( cacatuidae ). Cockatiel and cockatoo share many similarite including the characteristic crest, broad head , and males and females bout share incubation  responsibilites of the eggs. Cokatiels males and cockatoo males also do not display any obvious courtship riturals. When danger suspected ,bout cockatiels and cockatoo adopt a croushing posture from this stance , they slowly sway back and forth slightly lift the anterior wings and emit asort of hissing sound. It is believe that no other australian parrot exhibit a similar fear reaction . In their native land of australia cockatiels are called Quarrion and are gentle and docile birds that are said to be nomodic ranging accross the australian grassland and savannah looking for food and good nesting site.
Cockatiel size are between 10 - 13 inches and wight average of  78 - 125 grams and can live up to 10 -15 years but with the proper care cockatiel can live up to ripeful old age of over 25 years and more.
Cockatiels has been well established in european countries for well over 100 years and can now be found in every country a round the world where birds are bred like the little country of jamaica where I live . It is not known exactly when were first imported but it is recorded as the frist been bred in captivity in 1845 and the cockatiel is now rated as one of the most popular pet cage and aviary widely kept bird of the approximately 340 species of the order psittacine birds . They are hardier birds than the their rival the budgie which is the most popular birds of all the psittacine bird . The cockatiel have a longer life span than the budgie.
The cockatiels are gentle , characteristically happy , cheerful  , intelligent and amusing their sociable nature becomes tame quite easely and have pert and a bright personalities and can pick up a few words and phrases quite easy but are best know for their melodic whistling songs and if kept as a single bird they need regular and frequent human interaction . Unlike their larger cousin the cockatoos ( who can sometimes be more stubborn and reactive to change ) . Cockatiel are very flexilble and adoptadle birds . Although males cockatiels tend to be better vocalists and  are sometimes more aggressive than females , bout male and female make exellent pet providing that they are handled and tamed at early age or they can be hand fed also and becomes very tame.
Thougtout the year many color mutation has been develop trought selective breeding of the cockatiels resulting into many gorgeous colors. As pet these birds are generally quiet ,non demanding and are perfect for any bird lovers they are well known for their  melodic songs and whistling tune.
They are very easy to care for and if paired together will generally make prolific breeder once they reach the age to be bred which is best when they are a least 18 months old and are best tor the novice breeder. As a pet a cockatiel is ideal also for  the frist time pet owner very gentle , happy , cheerful never too moody or too demanding , they demand to be put on your shoulder for a ride and make cute noises in your ears. They are second in popularity to the budgie and continues to be a favorite pet bird among bird lovers every where a round the world .These sociable birds are sure to win your heart has they have won mines once you get involve with these beautiful birds that have left their native land of australia over a 100 year ago and are bred in captivite to day and will be enjoy for many years to come .
