If you keep the following supplies and medications on hand , you will be able to handle many of your pet birds'medical prodlems............The conscientious bird fancier will have a stock of basic medications and other first aid items for the use in emergency. This need not to be elaborated , but many of these item listed below can be a lifesavers to your birds in times of need.

BASIC SUPPLIES
 
HEAT SOURCE : infrared lamp (60-100 watt bulb).
 
HOSPITAL CAGE : several commercial models are availabe . Ask your avian veterinarian or pet store manager for advice.
 
CAGE COVERING : use a cage covering if you don't have a hospital cage. Towels or baby blankets are fine , as there are a number of commercial covers you can get from pet store. Drape these over an open bird  cage .
 
GAUZE BANDAGE: use one-half inch roll.
 
Sterile gauze pads.
 
Cotton-tipped swabs.
 
Rubbing alcohol.
 
Enviromental Thermometer: buy one that easy to read.
 
Adhesive or Masking Tape; use a half-inch roll.
 
Syringes or Plastic Medicine Droppers ; for administering oral medications
 
Feeding Tubes ; use 8F or 10F tubes , which many veterinarians carry. Ask your veterinarian to demonstrate the technique of tube feeding or ask an experince breeder who have many years of experince to show you how it is done.
 
Sharpe Scissors with rounded ends ( bady nail scissors ).
 
Needle-nosed Pliers and/or Tweezers.
 
 
 
BASIC MEDICATIONS
GEVRAL PROTEIN : For appetite loss. (always mix with mull soy , which is also a good source of essential vitamin and minerals) Use one part gevral protein to three parts mull soy. Tube feed 2-3ml, 2 - 3 times daily. Ask your avian veterinarian or an experince breeder for details.
GLUCOSE : as an emergency energy-giving food for sick birds that have not been eating. The glucose will quickly replace sugars lost from the birds body.
Kaopectate or Pepto-Bismol ; for loose droppings and regurgitation. Soothes and coats the intestines and helps from solid feces. 2 - 3 drops every 4 hours administered with a medicine dropper.
Karo Syrup ; for dehydration and as a provider of energy. Add 4 drops to a one quart (1 L) of water. Administer 8 - 10 drops slowly in the mouth every 20 to 30 minutes with a medicine dropper.
Maalox or Digel ; for crop disoders. Stoothes inflammation and disperses gas. Dosage : 2 - 3 drops every four hours.
Mineral Oil (liquid paraffin UK) ; for constipation , crop impaction , or egg binding. Two drops in  the bird mouth with a medicine dropper for 2 days.Note when administering mineral oil, take care that it doesn't enter the respiratory tract, as it can cause pneumonia, vitamin deficiencies , and possibly other problems.
Milk of Magnesia ; for constipation. 3 to 5 drops in the mouth with a medicine dropper, 2 times daily for 2 days." Note if the bird has kidney or heart problems Do not use it. Consult your avian vet.
Goodwinol , Mineral oil , Eurax , Scalex , Vaseline ; is use for scaly face and legs.
